Big Brian Maiden Flight

On Saturday 22nd of August Big Brian soared into the sky for the first time. Demonstrations of its flight characteristics and autonomous waypoint following capabilities were performed and all were passed with flying colours.

Big Brian will go through a rigorous post flight shake down of its avionics and airframe before returning to flight later this year. Expected upgrades include a Jetson Nano for computer Vision processing and an improved frame-arm connection design.

Build and development of Big Brian

Prototyping of this quad took some time due to COVID19 restrictions, and initially the main frame was a laser cut piece of MDF as a placeholder for our custom carbon fibre design which was still being manufactured.

The folding arm with locking dovetail joints can be seen here, along with the sheer massive scale of the 20" props and large motors being used for propulsion.
