What we are looking for

We welcome all students to apply. At Project Hex, we work with a lot of niche software and complicated designs, but you are not expected to know everything the moment you join. All we ask is that you have the enthusiasm to take the initiative and learn on the job. When picking any new member, we will consider the following attributes:

Oscar Chaudoir
Chief Engineer 20/21

Introduction to Project Hex

Project Hex is fundamentally a group of people that love to make drones, and see them fly. While there are plenty of reasons to join a student-led engineering project, the main reason that I have stuck with the team for 3 years, and plan to stick with them for 2 more, is that I find it incredibly rewarding to know that I am working on something so ambitious and complicated that I could not possibly do it by myself.

Seeing any one of our fleet take to the skies and land safely on the ground, knowing that even some tiny part of it was my idea, is something you just can’t get anywhere else. And even when it doesn’t go right, like at the 2019 IMechE UAS Challenge, when our hexacopter fell from the sky after losing connection to the ground station, the mad rush to finish it, including 3am fight tests, cleaning iron filings out of the motors, and last minute programming on the way to to flight line, is an experience like no other.

At Project Hex you will have the opportunity to take a leadership role, no matter your experience level, if you are committed and excited enough to learn the skills you need make an impact on the project, you will quickly find yourself organising build sessions, leading design reviews, purchasing parts and equipment, and gaining new skills you couldn’t anywhere else.

We believe that no design is ever perfect the first time, so you will be spending loads of time in the workshop, building, testing, and redesigning parts, or out at our field with one of our test aircraft to gather vital data to perfect your algorithm.

I hope to see all of our new recruits soon, and I’m sure you’ll find it just as interesting and rewarding as I have.
